Get Rid of the Clutter in Your House Before You Plan a Move

There are times in your life when you need to relocate, because you are moving to a different house in the same town, moving out of town because you have a new job, have retired and moving to a smaller house, or for a host of other reasons. Moving a home can be quite a stressful time, what with having to upset your well set routine, having to make new arrangements for everything from having your mail readdressed, making arrangements for schooling for the children at the new place, making new friends and neighbours, and above all transferring all your furniture and belongings to the new home. This last item is by far the most stressful, and you can greatly reduce this by reducing the number of things you have to take with you.

In most cases, you will engage the services of a moving company to help you in this move, and they are people who charge you for their services both depending on the volume and weight of the items that you want transferred to your new location. It, therefore, makes great sense to reduce the things you have to shift by getting rid of all unwanted stuff before you engage the services of that moving company. If you do this, you will save yourself the time of boxing up things that you will probably not need in the new house. As we said, this can save you a lot of money on the charges that a moving company will make. You will be less stressed because your packing efforts are lessened, and when you get to your new house, you will find that you have much more space. And if you are selling your house, it will make it easier for you to prepare the house for viewing of potential buyers.

In most cases, moving or relocating are decisions that are well thought out and planned in advance. So, as soon as you have set the ball rolling on your move, start planning on reducing the clutter in your home, so that you get rid of stuff before you move. Chances are that if you have lived in your present house for a fair length of time that is measured in years, you will have accumulated in it a fair number of things, many of which you may not even be using. It could be toys that the children have outgrown, books you read a long time ago, clothes that children or you no more fit into, some old furniture, and many others. There will also be old kitchen equipment or electronics that are now outdated, even parts of your cars, and many other things which you have even forgotten that you ever had, and others that you are sentimentally attached to. Just have a look at your attic, basement and garage, and tell me if everything that is stored in them, and which you have not looked at for years, is even remotely useful for you in your new house.

How do we start this process of decluttering? The best is to do it room by room. Ask the other members of the family to go through their own rooms and make piles of things that they no more want. You need to have overriding veto on the things that can be retained and those that have to go, because you will often find that the reasons for carrying along a few items are more sentimental than practical. Start with the biggest accumulator of junk, which will be basements, attics, garages, and storage cupboards. Go in to every room with two boxes, one for things you will keep and one for things that you need to get rid of. You can even do this by category, where you go for all the clothes in the home, bed linens, shoes, etc. Do what you are comfortable with. Doing it room by room makes greater sense as you are then sure that a room now contains only those things that you will take along with you.

Gather all the discarded items in one central space, while the ones you are taking with you can find some temporary storage in your present home till it is time to pack them. To help in this getting rid of stuff, be ruthless about those items you have not used in the last year or for some time and really think whether they will have any use in the new home. Get rid of things that are past their expiry dates, where you have more than one, those that are broken, and those that you have no use for. Above all, think about your new home, and will the item you are thinking of retaining fit in to your new home and play a useful part in it.

Now that you have decluttered all the rooms in your home, again sort them out into various categories, before you decide on their further disposal. You can then organize a garage sale that can bring you in some money that can help you to pay for the move. Or ask friends and neighbours if they need anything from them. You can even donate quite a few things to charitable organizations and gain their goodwill. Let the rest find their way into the garbage.

Complete this exercise of getting rid of stuff well in advance of your planned moving. You will then find that it is much easier to pack what you do plan to take along, and will also have saved yourself substantial costs.
